Dog Training Q&A What Would Jeff Do?

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #106

using vibrate and tone in remote collars.

Some remote collars have a vibrate and a tone function as well as the standard shock or stim function

I get lots of folks that mention to me at my seminars and in my consults that when they use vibrate the dog either does nothing or gets freaked out, every once and a while someone will say that the vibrate function can stop a certain behavior, but when the dog is in drive or lots of distractions the dog does not respond to it. I also have seen dogs totally freaked out by the vibrate function.

On the tone function lots of folks say that when they use it the dog does not respond...that is because the tone function has ZERO meaning to a dog, you have to actually teach the dog what it means. It is no different than a whistle, dogs that respond to recall when a whistle is blown had to be trained to what that acdtually means, a whistle blowing has zero meaning to a person or a dog unless it is taught through training what it means.

2 reasons why we do not use either of these functions on the remote collar when we train dogs.
