Dog Training Q&A What Would Jeff Do?

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #105

Folks are always trying to humanize dogs when they talk about how I train dogs, Would you do that to a child, How would you like it if that was done to your child etc...all referring to our training philosophy of reward and punishment and folks being against the concept of punishment in dogs..

So let me share with you something my wife experienced today and something I see everyday everywhere I go and I travel around the world.

In no way is this an attack on anyone in particular but it is an example of the greater problem we have with kids and dogs.

My wife is at ballet today with one of our daughters, she loves to hang out with the other moms (yes its all moms) one of the moms had 3 kids in the waiting room with her 4th in dance class.

The 3 kids where out of control, running around, being loud and disruptive and not listening to their mother at all. It distrupted the whole waiting room for 1 hour. It affected all of the people in the waiting room, so someone elses kids and their behavior had a negative effect on the rest of the parents.

As soon as the mom left, all of the parents said the same thing, lack of discipline, lack of consequences, lack of structure, lack of rules, and then all mentioned different punishments that should be given to the kids..not one mom mentioned that the kids needed more love and affection at all, none of the comments even rhymed with love and affection.

The concept of structure, guidance, leadership, rules, boundaries and discipline or punishment is what was needed in order to prevent and stop the unwanted behavior.

Its as simple as that with dogs. So YES i will do the same thing with my dogs and my client dogs as I do with my children, its not about the tools at all, its about the concepts..the lack of the above creates out of control chaos in both dogs and children.
