What Would Jeff Do? dog Training Tip of the Day #134
This weekend in Long Island I am working with lots of different dogs and people, one of the dogs in particular is highly dog reactive and a big bite risk. So the first thing we did was stop the dog from lunging at other dogs and had the dog just hang out with a bunch of dogs, then we got the dog to make a better choice in situations where the dog wanted to lunge. Why do dogs lunge? usually to move things away from them, people or dogs, and it works, when you have a dog let alone a 80-100lb dog lunging at something that something either engages in a fight or moves away. Either way the dog doing the lunging thinks its doing the correct thing. So we teach the dog to move away from pressure when it gets to be too much, its not about "teaching an alternative behavior" its about teaching a dog how to live in our world and if you dn't like something you can't just be acting a dog like and push things away by rushing it, lunging at it, barking at it or attacking it. At the same time it teaches dogs a calm state of mind, better coping skills and create a dog that at a minimum that is livable and you can take around other people and dogs. This protocol took 10 minutes. So imagine with patterning what you can do and accomplish.
