What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #124
Off leash recall is a life saver and if you don't have it don't have your dog off leash.
I am motivated by this by a news story that was sent to me today from Juneau Alaska of 2 dogs that where off leash hiking and charged a bear and where instantly killed by the bear, at no fault of the bear, thats what happens in the wild, animals kill and are killed.
Though the chances of your dog charging a bear and be killed are extremely slim, but not having your dog under voice control (meaning when you call your back to you it immediately turns and runs to you and stops what it was doing, no matter what the distraction is) if you cannot do that you should not have your dog off leash in areas that have dangerous situation,which can include, on leash dogs, children, adults, bikers, joggers, streets, cars, trucks and many things that can cause harm or death to your dog or your dog can cause harm to something else.
Please don't be so un-self aware that your dog will not cause harm to something else, over and over I am getting messages about off leash dogs rushing people and dogs walking and the off leash dogs are attacking and/or jumping on or running up to and barking at people and dogs. Meanwhile the owners have zero voice control or any general control and are actually upset at the "victim" instead of taking full responsibility. Your dog should not be off leash.
The cool thing is that you can have a reliable recall with a dog under high levels of distractions in a couple of months or shorter, and a remote collar is a fantastic tool to not only speed that along but also to proof the dog under high levels of distractions.
Whenever I use the term "speed" or imply that the training can be done quick or quicker it gets turned into a negative like someone would be taking shortcuts. That is the farthest thing from the truth. Bottom line across the board and dog trained on a remote collar is going to have a better and more reliable recall than a dog that is not trained on one. Also you can train more dogs on a reliable recall on a remote collar then dogs without one.
I am not saying you cannot get a reliable recall without using a remote collar, of course you can (but you will be using some sort of punishment for noncompliance as you need to in order to proof it) Not many folks can call their dog in high drive off of a bear, but many of us (the average pet dog owner) that have trained our dogs on remote collars can easily do it.
The bigger point being that having a off leash trained dog under voice control can be accomplished and save your dogs life.
