Dog Training Q&A What Would Jeff Do?

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #128

No amount of obedience training is going to stop your dog from biting dogs or people.

I get so many calls from folks who are struggling with aggression with their dogs and they have started watching our videos and started doing obedience training, leadership skills, household mgmt etc and making improvents on their dogs, BUT.....the biting is still there.

Yep and it will still be there since obedience does not stop biting, we deal with biting dogs every day at the training center, and 90% of the day and sometimes 100% of the day we spend on positive training as we are working on teaching things we want them to do.

When it comes to stopping biting though you need to learn how to properly punish (yes there is a proper way to do it) in order to stop the biting. That is why I talk so much about punishment since so many folks are surrendering and/or putting down their dogs because they cannot stop certain behaviors especially aggression. I get it, I don't want a biting dog in my house unless I can stop the biting either. In order to do it though you are going to have to learn how to punish the thought and the action of biting. Yes you want to supress the behavior, lots of folks will say that is a bad thing, but I can't think of a better thing as far as stopping an unwanted behavior, of course you want to supress it.

So keep up the obedience work, keep up teaching good manners, but when it comes time to the biting stuff, be prepared to learn and apply proper punishment.
